What should you avoid in a business? originally appeared on Quora: the place to gain and share knowledge, empowering people to learn from others and better understand the world.

Answer by Charlene Walters, PhD, Business & Branding Mentor, Corporate Training, on Quora:

When you’re in business, knowing what to avoid is just as important as knowing what to focus on. This applies to both entrepreneurs and corporate leaders.

Here are some of things to definitely avoid in business:

Overscheduling. Don’t overschedule yourself to the point where you are exhausted and can’t get anything done. Leave plenty of time in your day for breaks and getting larger chunks of work completed. And, include time for those other things that balance you.

Overcommitting. We want to be accommodating and do everything that’s asked of us, but it’s just not possible. Learn to be okay with saying no. It’s important, and even very necessary, to do at times. The rule of thumb that I use is to only commit to things that further my objectives or mean something to me personally. Otherwise, I am fine with turning them down.

Mediocrity. As they say, go big or go home. You don’t want to do things halfway-ever. When you take on a project or a task, do it well. Mediocrity is for mediocre people and you are not one of them.

Beating Yourself Up. Successful leaders avoid berating themselves when they make a mistake or things go wrong. Failure, setbacks and pitfalls are all inevitable. It’s how you deal with them that counts. Ask questions, try to understand what happened, and strive to do better next time (without blaming yourself).

Avoidance. Procrastination won’t get you anywhere. Don’t avoid conversations or things that are uncomfortable, difficult, or overwhelming. Learn to tackle them early, chipping away at them as soon as you can. Stalling will only make it worse.
