German headphone and microphone brand beyerdynamic has been around for decades now and has built a reputation for superb professional audio equipment. Countless recording studios and broadcasters use the company’s headphones for producing radio programs, podcasts and music. However, until now, beyerdynamic hasn’t entered the true wireless earbud market.

That changes from today with the launch of the beyerdynamic Free BYRD. These all-new TWS earbuds blend beyerdynamic’s reputation for premium sound quality with a design that’s reminiscent of the classic guitar plectrum. That’s a dead giveaway that these earbuds are aimed squarely at music lovers.

Combining beyerdynamic’s audio expertise with some cutting-edge manufacturing, the new Free BYRD earbuds deliver the classic beyerdynamic sound anywhere the user chooses. The wireless Bluetooth earbuds also feature ANC (active noise canceling) and an impressive 11 hours of playing time on a single charge.

The Free BYRD use powerful 10mm dynamic drivers in each earpiece and they support aptX Adaptive and AAC Bluetooth audio codecs. The hybrid ANC uses feed-back and feed-forward technology to ensure distracting and unwanted noises are filtered out so that the user can concentrate on the music and nothing else. There’s also Transparency Mode that can be turned on with a tap of the earbuds’ control buttons. The Transparency Mode allows a certain amount of outside sound to mix in with the music and is useful for listening out for a travel announcement or being aware of dangers from traffic when jogging.

A major feature of the Free BYRD earbuds is their comfortable and secure fit. Packaged with the earbuds is a selection of five silicone earpieces in a range of different sizes to ensure the best possible fit. There are also three sets of memory foam earpieces included which are particularly handy when exercising vigorously and an even more secure fit is required. The Free BYRD earbuds are splash resistant with IPX4 certification which protects them against sweat during extreme workouts or when running in the rain.

For those who use their earbuds for making and taking phone calls, the beyerdynamic Free BYRD earbuds use Qualcomm dual 2-mic cVc technology for the clearest speech intelligibility, even when making calls in noisy environments. There are a total of four microphones, two on each earpiece. There’s also support built-in for Google Fast Pair so the earbuds can be connected with Android devices in a matter of seconds. The Free BYRD are also certified for working with Amazon’s Alexa and Apple’s Siri voice assistants.

When it comes to using the Free BYRD for gaming and movie watching, there’s a Low-Latency Mode that ensures words and images remain in perfect synchronization. A Light Guide system helps the user select the correct mode using a sequence of different-colored LEDs. As with most earbuds, the Free BYRD have a comprehensive set of controls available by the touch-sensitive panels on each earbud.

The Free BYRD earbuds can be used with beyerdynamic’s updated MIY app. The “MOSAYC – Attention to Detail with Mimi Sound Personalization” tunes the sound of the earbuds to suit the user’s preferences. By taking a two-minute listening test, the sound and settings of the earbuds can be personalized and adjusted to the user’s hearing profile. Other features available with the MIY app include a Sidetone feature that enables the user to hear their own voice during phone calls. An equalizer function offers customization of audio content with a range of EQ presets. The app is also used to update the earbuds whenever beyerdynamic releases over-the-air firmware updates.

As well as an extra-long battery life of up to 11 hours with a single charge, the Free BYRD are stored in their compact charging case which is recharged using a USB-C cable or with any Qi wireless charging pads. If users are in a hurry, a quick 10-minute charge will provide up to 70 minutes of playing time. The charging case for the earbuds holds a further 19 hours of playtime, delivering a maximum of 30 hours of total usage before the case needs recharging.

Verdict: The sound produced by the beyerdynamic Free BYRD earbuds is nothing short of awesome. It may have taken beyerdynamic a while to come up with its own pair of true wireless earbuds, but it was well worth the wait. The Free BYRD earbuds knock the sound out of the park. There’s a fulsome sound with bags of energy and plenty of volume to spare. The solid bass never overwhelms the music but it’s plentiful and underpins the rest of the frequencies. The midrange is nicely forward and wonderfully clear while the top end is smooth and perfectly focused. The distortion levels are very low and that makes even longer listening sessions with the beyerdynamic Free BYRD earbuds enjoyable and relaxing. Couple this with the excellent battery life, effective noise canceling and a comfortable fit, and you have a pair of earbuds that delight. Highly Recommended.

Pricing & Availability: The beyerdynamic Free BYRD true wireless earbuds are available in Black or Grey finishes and go on sale today from the beyerdynamic online store or via Amazon.com, priced at $249 / £199 / €229.
