A new report suggests that next year’s Galaxy S23 Ultra will finally introduce a long-awaited, and rather huge, upgrade.

The Galaxy S22 Ultra already features one of the highest-resolution cameras available thanks to its 108-megapixel main sensor. However, a new report by ET News claims that next year’s Galaxy S23 will likely offer close to double that resolution by switching to Samsung’s 200-megapixel Isocell HP1 monster.

Originally tipped to appear in this year’s Galaxy S22 Ultra flagship, the 200-megapixel Isocell HP1, revealed in September of last year, has yet to make an appearance in any Samsung smartphone. If the Galaxy S23 Ultra were to receive the new sensor it would gain some big potential improvements in both photo and video quality. However, perhaps counter-intuitively, the gains come not from simply delivering higher-resolution images, but from the improvements Samsung is able to make to many of the sensor’s advanced technologies.


Samsung’s ‘Chameleon’ Sensor

As is invariably the case with such ultra-high-resolution sensors, the Isocell HP1 won’t typically be used to create 200-megapixel images. Instead, the camera will deploy Samsung’s ‘ChameleonCell technology’ which additionally enables it to produce images in either 12.5-megapixel or 50-megapixel modes.

ChameleonCell technology is an advanced form of pixel binning that allows the sensor to combine neighboring pixels in groups of four or sixteen in order to trade off resolution in favor of low light performance to best suit the shooting conditions at the moment of capture. Pixel binning also brings several other image quality improvements which ChemelonCell technology should be able to leverage further than previous sensors thanks to increasing the maximum cell size from nine pixels on the Galaxy S22 Ultra to sixteen.

Better Quality Video

Furthermore the sensor’s 50-megapixel mode (8,192 by 6,144 pixels) is a close fit for 8K video recording at 7,680 by 4,320 pixels. This will help maintain image quality by significantly reducing any cropping or processing required when shooting at the maximum 8K resolution. It will also minimize the amount by which the image automatically ‘zooms in’ when switching from photo to video mode.

Quality improvements aside, the new 200-megapixel sensor will also allow Samsung to print a very big number on the back of the phone and that alone with no-doubt be enough to convince some potential buyers to upgrade.
