Bowers & Wilkins and McLaren Automotive have collaborated to produce a limited edition of the B&W Px8 noise-canceling wireless headphones. Specially produced to celebrate McLaren’s unique supercar design, this is the first headphone collaboration to result from the long-standing relationship between the two companies.
The Px8 is the flagship model from the Bowers & Wilkins range, and this limited run’s design marks the relationship between the luxury supercar makers. Since 2015, Bowers & Wilkins has been responsible for developing high-performance audio systems installed in McLaren’s supercars and hypercars.
The partnership between the two companies has been recognized with three iF design awards for the system integrations Bowers & Wilkins has designed for the McLaren Speedtail, McLaren GT, and most recently, the McLaren Artura. Bowers & Wilkins worked closely with McLaren’s design and engineering teams to create and optimize the audio system installed in the company’s first series production high-performance hybrid supercar – the McLaren Artura.
The McLaren Artura features the latest speaker technologies, developed in Southwater, home to the Bowers & Wilkins research and development team since 2019 and only 30 miles away from the McLaren global HQ in Surrey, where the supercars and hypercars are built by hand.
The Px8 McLaren Edition has a Galvanic grey finish and McLaren Papaya Orange highlights, inspired by the famous color adopted by founder Bruce McLaren for his early racing cars. Sharing McLaren’s obsession with technology and aesthetics, the Px8 McLaren Edition headphones offer high-quality wireless sound.
The McLaren Edition Px8 use all-new and bespoke 40mm Carbon Cone drive units inspired by technology used in Bowers & Wilkins reference-quality loudspeakers. The Carbon Cone drive units are angled inside each earcup to ensure a consistent distance relative to the listener’s ears from every point across the driver’s surface to producing an immersive and accurate soundstage. According to Bowers & Wilkins, the new drivers make the best sound quality that the company has ever delivered from a pair of wireless headphones.
The Px8 support Qualcomm’s aptX Adaptive audio codec, which ensures the best possible wireless sound when paired with compatible phones, tablets and computers. USB-C and 3.5mm analog cable connections are also supported with both cable types included in a matching carry case that comes with the package.
Whether using wireless or wired connections, the Px8 use high-performance Digital Signal Processing (DSP) to create 24-bit high-resolution sound from leading streaming services like Tidal and Qobuz. The Px8 headphones also use proprietary noise-cancellation technology developed by Bowers & Wilkins. The resulting technology shuts out unwanted noise without impairing the reproduction quality of the music.
Six high-performance microphones are built into the Px8, which work together to deliver the best results. Two microphones measure the output of each drive unit, two react to ambient noise from the outside world and two pick up the user’s voice and include enhanced noise suppression.
Pricing & Availability: The new Px8 McLaren Edition headphones will be available from the Bowers & Wilkins website, mclarenstore.com and select retailers from 7th December priced at $799 / £699 / €799.
