Whether you’re right along the coast or just 50 miles inland, knowing your risks to hurricanes and tropical storms is important to keeping you and your loved ones safe.

Hurricane Season typically runs between June 1st and November 30th, though storms can exist even past this window. Here are some tips you can take to become weather ready:

  • Figure out what risk your property has to tropical weather. Hurricanes and Tropical storms carry not just a risk for damaging winds, but also flooding and storm surge.
  • Depending on the severity of the storm and your location in respect to the coast, it’s good to gather an evacuation plan/route and figure out your method of transportation. Also, figure out where you will be headed to, whether it’s a relative’s residence or a hotel/motel.
  • Gather necessary supplies: Water, flashlights, medications, first aid materials, extra batteries, enough food to last as much as a week, cash, etc. Having a battery operated weather radio is important incase you lose cell or internet service.
  • Don’t forget your pets in your evacuation plan!
  • Stay informed and keep up with your local forecast. Storm track and intensity can change days out from the event, so it’s important to keep tabs in case you need to evacuate.
  • If you are prone to flooding or live right along the shore, make sure you have some form of flood insurance!
